Author Guidelines

The Journal of Nurse Anesthesiology and Perioperative Practice (JNAPP) welcomes high-quality scholarly work that advances the science, practice, education, leadership, quality, and safety of nurse anesthesiology and perioperative care. As an open-access, peer-reviewed journal, JNAPP is committed to publishing rigorous, clinically relevant, and practice-changing scholarship from across the perioperative continuum.

We encourage submissions from a broad community of professionals, including certified registered nurse anesthetists (CRNAs), student registered nurse anesthetists (SRNAs), perioperative nurses, perioperative and surgical advanced practice providers (nurse practitioners & physician assistants), perfusionists, neuroscientists & neuromonitoring specialists, quality improvement professionals, educators, health systems leaders, and other interdisciplinary collaborators whose work contributes to safer, higher-quality perioperative care.

JNAPP publishes a wide variety of manuscript types including: case studies & case series, scoping reviews, evidence-based practice and quality improvement reports, clinical observation reports, "Lessons from the OR" (human factors and patient safety reports), perspectives and commentaries, and other scholarly works aligned with the journal's mission.

All manuscripts should be submitted as Microsoft Word documents and prepared according to the American Medical Association (AMA) Manual of Style. Authors should also follow the JNAPP-specific instructions for the manuscript category being submitted. Detailed requirements—including formatting, structure, reporting expectations, word limits, figures and tables, and reference guidance—are provided within the individual Author Guidelines for each manuscript type. Please review the appropriate guideline carefully before submitting your manuscript.

Manuscript Formatting

All manuscripts must be submitted as a Microsoft Word file. Manuscripts should be exactly as long as necessary to describe the scholarship in a comprehensive manner. While no formal page limits are in place, we urge authors to respect the time of editors, reviewers, and readers by making the work as succinct as possible. All figures and tables must be mentioned in the order of their appearance and should be imbedded in the text. Once a paper is accepted the separate figure and table files will be required.

Contributions should be in English and clearly written. Papers not clearly written may be returned for rewriting prior to review. Manuscripts should follow American Medical Association (AMA) Manual of Style. 

Specific Author Guidelines According to Manuscript Type

We encourage authors to view these guidelines not simply as formatting requirements, but as tools to help communicate their work clearly, rigorously, and in a manner that maximizes its impact on clinical practice. Some JNAPP guidelines reference internationally accepted standards (e.g. SQUIRE), which authors should use alongside JNAPP guidelines.
